Legends and Myths--Heather's Assignment

  1. Alligators live in New York City sewer system that were flushed down the toilets.
  2. Visiting different tanning salons in one day for several weeks can cook your organs.
  3. According to urban-myth scholar Jan Harold Brunvand, the myth of the "poison dress" was one of the first American urban legends brought to the attention of folklorists back in the 1940s. Brunvand surmises that the legend may derive from older stories about "disease-infected blankets or clothing given to native peoples in order to eliminate them," which may have in turn evolved from ancient Greek stories of revenge.
